Coca-Cola Soccer Team

15, December 2009

The coca-cola soccer team is a very advanced soccer team. It is split up into the A and the B team. The A team being better. 2 weeks ago they had try outs from 5:30-7:00 pm, every Wednesday. Trust me it's pretty exhausting. The coaches who decided the teams were Mr.Schwartz, Mr.Beech, Mr.Gareth, Mr.Lee, and Mr.Trapp. (My dad). This is the u-12 squad meaning that I was one of the oldest, which was good, because usually I'm one of the youngest and it's hard to make the A squad. Remember this is a league where schools compete. So basically the players are representing their school!

The coca-cola league is a great way to meet friends, and have fun although it's very competitive! First of all there is a league. And then there's a cup. In the league you can't get disqualified if you lose! Although the main point is to win, and score more goals. The cup is where the score doesn't matter. You just have to win the match. If you win you move on. If you lose you are disqualified! Sometimes the matches can be unfair, because sometimes they put a B team against an A team. Unfair, right?

Anyway the cup is sponsored by Greenfields milk, and the league is sponsored by coca-cola which works with Powerade. A drink soccer players need to boost up their soccer game! I've been in the coca-cola team lots of times already, and I'm hoping that this year it's going to be more exciting than all of my years that I've participated in. League games are usually played on Saturday, and cup games are usually always played on Sunday. I have no idea why they are played on separate days.

I have to say I'm very impressed with the teams this year, because the A, and B squads are really fascinating. I wonder if during the games they still have chocolate milk samples for greenfields. I have to admit they are pretty good! The referee's are really good, but sometimes they get too overwhelmed about the fouls. There are many people who wanted to be on the soccer team but of course there were cuts. I wish we could have as many people join, and make as many squads that we needed. I find it peculiar that some schools have more squads than the other schools.

It's better being the tallest, right?

I think it's better being the tallest than being the smallest, because you have way more advantages when your taller. Suppose you're playing basketball, or soccer. People that are taller have a better chance of getting the ball. Of course it's not bad being small, but I just think if you're the tallest you have a much easier time. This is from my description, and I don't know how you'll take it. But a big part of my life is soccer and it's not very easy to play soccer with a bunch of people that are way taller than you. I mean if you're a very fast soccer player you'll pass them quickly, but usually the taller people have an advantage!

Being the tallest person is way better than being the smallest person, because when a taller person comes up to you you feel trepidation, right? Plus when you're a taller person you have nothing to worry about. Although, there are some advantages of being small, like not bumping your head on a door. Or fitting through something... And much more. Another good thing about being tall is, when you're going to the movies. If you're a tall person you don't have to worry about who's sitting in front of you. And if you're a small person, you don't want a taller person blocking your view, right? Think about it.

It's the same thing with your class seating, a taller person always blocks the smaller persons view, so they can't see. Not on purpose, but just accidental. I don't know if this is a good thing for you, but I always want to be taller than my brother. Not that I want to humiliate him, but I just want to look like I eat my vegetables. Which I do occasionally... Sometimes... Seldom...

Being tall is great, it has so many advantages. Now you might not think being tall is great, but trust me it is great!

The Penderwicks

The Penderwicks
Jeanne Birdsall
****
I gave this book 4 stars, because I felt a lot of connections, and it was hilarious, and very entertaining!!! Basically what I'm saying is that it was 3 thumbs up!

This book is about four sisters, with the last name Penderwick. They didn't know that they'd have to stay in a beautiful estate called Arundel for their summer holidays. Now let me just tell these sisters do everything together, but what they really love to do together is exploring! And the son of the owner is included in the fun too, I mean who would miss it? The owner's name is Arundel, and his son's name is Jeffrey.
Jeffrey is the perfect companion for the four sisters, I mean he's brave, strong, and caring! Exactly what they need in this holiday, because you'll never know what's going to happen. I hope I'm not giving away something...
The bad thing is that Jeffrey's mom is less than thrilled with the Penderwick sisters, and she always keeps a close eye on them. And the only thing you'll hear when she's around her son, and the Penderwicks is. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE! They will, right? In this book Jeffrey, and the Penderwick sisters will venture through their new journey.
Trust me, you'll never know what's going to happen! This book is packed with laughter, adventure, a little romance, and much much more!

Water Questions 2

1) List the main reasons for water scarcity.

The main reasons for water scarcity are Land Degradation, Variations in climate, Water pollution and Population growth.

2) What is a drought? What type of hardships do you think that a drought could cause if you were living in a village in a poor country such as Ethiopia?

A drought is a time of less average precipitation.

3) How does land degradation affect the supply of fresh water?

Because land degradatoin infects the fresh water, so we can't drink it.

4)

(a) What is El Nino?

El Nino is a warming that developes every 3-5 years.

(b) Why does El Nino often cause drought in Australia?

Because El Nino is accompanied by reversal of air pressure across the Pacific Ocean, resulting high pressure building up over most of Australia.

5) Observe the map showing the global effects of El Nino 1982 - 83.

(a) What effects does El Nino have on the availability of fresh water?

It blows all the water on land.

(b) Name the countries and describe the problems that acrose from decreased rainfall caused by El Nino.

Bintaro Lama Field Trip

On the 12Th of November all of the 6Th graders went on a field trip. Some of them went to the water treatment plant, and some went to the Kampung, we went to the Kampung. What really touched me was that, we don't have to worry about water. It just comes to our homes, but for the Kampung people they have to get the water from the dirty river, and clean it themselves! It never occurred to me that how lucky we are to have access to fresh water whenever we want, with no trouble! We split in about 6 groups, and each group saw a station at different times, it really taught how to clean dirty water to clean water. We went to stations 6, 2 and 4.

Station 6 -

Station 6 was adding and shaking chemicals. In this step they add the chemicals, which can be held in a small tablet or a liquid, so that the water is clean.

They shake the water for 30 seconds, non-stop so that the liquid or tablet has spread through out the water. The tablet will begin to dissolve the lounger you have it in the water. Once youfinish shaking it for 30 seconds the water should look see through, and is now SAFE to drink.

Station 2 -

Station 2 is Public Health Promotion. This is where they teach the children how to stop water disease transmission. This step is broken into pieces.

This is how you stop water disease transmission -

1. Wash your hands with clean water. Make sure you rub your hands with soap, then rinse yourhands with clean water. And dry it with a towel.

2. Make a toilet, people need proper toilets with septic tanks.

3. Cover your food, if you don’t cover your food flies will come land on it, and who knows where they’ve been.
4. Use aqua taps and Rah mat air.

What is Aqua taps? Aqua taps is a tablet. You can use 1 tablet for 20 liters of water in normal condition, and in extreme condition you can use 1 tablet for 10 liters of water.

Station 4 -

In station 4 you do Flocculation, Sedimentation and Filtration. Flocculation is when you mix the flock with a chemical and then mix it. Sedimentation is when the flock sinks to the bottom, and filtration is when the water filtrates through the clay pot

The ride back to Cilandak was hilarious!!! I bet Val and Maya that I could finish a whole Isotonic bottle with out putting my mouth of the bottle, and of course I succeeded!!! Then Maya tried and Val played the "Peanut Butter Jelly Song"and Maya bursted into laughter! All of the water that she spat out landed on my knee... Eeeewww!!!

I've learned that not everyone around the world has access to water, and I've learned how to turn dirty water into to clean water.

Water Questions

1. What percentage of the world's supply of water is fresh water?

There is 2.5 percent of fresh water on earth.

2. Where is the world's supply of fresh water found?

I think the world's supply of fresh water is mostly found in the United States.

3. Even though the supply of fresh water is abundant it is still a problem. Why?

Yes there is a problem, because water is the most abundant thing on earth, but people need fresh water. And only 2.5 percent of fresh water is on earth!

4. Observe the map of world average annual precipitation (opposite).

a) Describe the changes in rainfall occur as you move from the southern to the northern tip of of Africa.

On the bottom of Africa there is a little more rain than the top of Africa.

b) Describe the changes in rainfall that occur as you move from the western to the eastern tip of Australia along the the Tropic of Capricorn.

On the eastern side there is much more rainfall than on the western side.

a) Which parts of the world appear to have a large amount of water available per person?

Most of the northern side has a lot of water per person.

b) Which parts of the world appear to have a small amount of water per person?

On the west side there's not much water available per person.

6. Observe the diagram of water use.

a) What are the main uses of water?

The most use of water is on Reservoir losses from evaporation and seepage.

b) Which uses have increased the most over the last century?

Water Treatment Steps

You can really see the difference between clean water, and dirty water. First of all clean water is tasteless and odorless.... And dirty water is yellow! Plus you can totally smell the dirt that's in there, and it tastes disgusting!!! SO DON'T TRY IT!!!
STEP 1 - Taking the big pieces out of the water
In this step they have these huge things that block the big trash from getting in. Now this step ONLY stops the BIG pieces. When there is a big piece it will get caught in one of the things that dig into the ground and then just stay there. It won't just go away. Someone has to take it out, otherwise it'll just stay in the water, until someone takes it out. It looks really grouse, because all the other stuff just flows into there, and let me tell you, there's some really nasty stuff flowing in there!
STEP 2 - Aeration

Aeration means that they have to poke a hole into the ground so it allows air and water penetrate the surface of the soil. The area is top dressed afterward and sand fills the holes to prevent closure.

STEP 3 - Adding Chemicals

This is an important step of the process. This step is when they have to add all of the chemicals, so that the dirty stuff floats up to the surface.

STEP 4 - Sedimentation

Sedimentation is used to settle out solids in water under the influence of gravity. In sedimentation there are 4 steps.
Step 1 - Is when every particle settles independently.
Step 2 - Is when the particles flocculate as they settle.

Step 3 & 4 - Is when the sludge is thickening.
STEP 5 - Filtration
Filtration is when is passing through a filter.
The trip to the Water Treatment Plant was very cool. I got to learn so many more things about water than I knew at the beginning. In all there are 5 steps.
I thought this trip was really great. Although I must say everyone had sweat dripping down their chins. Sorry that there's not so much of an explanation for filtration. But I think everyone should understand.

A Friend Like You! (Poem)

A FRIEND LIKE YOU

Everyone should have
friends like you
You guys are so much fun to be with
And you are such a good person
You crack me up with laughter
And touch my heart with your kindness
You have a wonderful ability
To know when to offer advice
And when to sit in quiet support
Time after time
You've come to my rescue
And brightened so many
Of my routine days
And time after time
I've realized how fortunate
I am that my life includes you
I really do believe you

And when the hard times hit me

You're always there to cheer me up,

And turn a sad face into a smile

I always know I can count on you,

And I know I can ALWAYS trust you!!!
Everybody should have a friends like you
But so far it looks like
You are one of a kind!

The Water Cycle

Evaporation is when the water is transfared up into the air. In this picture the small bubbles are water vapor, which carries the water up into the sky.
Condensation is the process which creates clouds, and so it's necessary for rain and snow formation as well.

Precipitation is when there is too much water in the clouds that the cloud can't hold on to it anymore. So then the cloud has to let the water out which causes rainfall.

Infiltration is when the rainfall drops onto the ground, and then sinks into any hole or crack there is in the ground.

And then the Water Cycle starts all over again!

AAHH THE PAIN!

Nora Trapp

“No, that is so unfair you get a 7th grader!!!” I shouted in my brothers’ face. “But you have three 6th graders, and that’s how much one 7th grader is worth!”

“Fine, but if we lose it’s because the teams are so unfair.” I yelled in displeasure!

“Alright, whoever wins gets to ride on the loser’s back.” My brother said pulling his hand out, ready to make the bet official. I gave him my hand, but I didn’t look at his face because I was so mad at him. But as we keep on playing we have a tie, none of us can score the next goal. So we said “who ever scores this goal has the ability to dominate our favorite seat in the living room for 1 month!!!” Who wouldn’t say yes to this deal? One month, really one month, and this time my parents were listening to. So this game would really count.

“AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH” I yell, falling down on the ground not moving a single muscle while the parents start crowding around me. I felt like bursting out even more tears, but I was playing with younger kids and I didn’t want to be the one crying!!! I was so overwhelmed when I found out I was on the ground instead of my brother. Yes he is my older brother, but I wanted to win the ball this time, which I always do, but today it just wasn’t my lucky day.

My brother knows it was a very malicious thing to do, but he should at least help me up, instead of my mom helping me up, because obviously it was his responsibility of taking care of me, since it was HIS fault!!! The next thing I know is that they’re riding me in a car full speed to global doctor. Trust me when you’re already in pain you feel even more in pain when you’re in a car that’s going super speed.

Okay this is how it started. It was the perfect day for playing soccer, not too hot, not too breezy. Any way we had started of with a very easy, fun game. As the game wraps up to the ending, we ask some parents to play with us, because both teams were getting exhausted.

“Two more minutes, alright guys.” My mom shouts, from the distance.

And now it’s only me, against my brother one on one. I look him in the eye with a keen look determined to get pass him, and score. As I tap the ball skillfully, the next thing I can see is my brother running full speed against me. Then I begin to recognize that it’s my foot that’s in pain. As I notice while I’m dropping to the ground, my brother’s foot was still on my foot, and I was running the other way. Now what I hear is a small crack. I can’t explain what the crack sounds like. But I when I bend my foot I can hear the same crack.

After I take my small nap, which everyone does when they’re injured? The next thing that I find out is that I have to walk around with these very annoying crutches. That means no soccer for two months. Am I even able to survive that long?

The Roar of the Crowd

The Roar of the Crowd
Rich Wallace
***

This book is about a boy named Manny, and he's starting his VERY FIRST football season at the age of 12. And at age 12 there are a lot of tough guys who will just ram in to you like you're a piece of broccoli, and every boy hates broccoli.

And the worst thing is that Manny is like a small plastic pole that anyone can knock over. And when the coaches see what he does, they always turn and frown at each other, this isn't good… Especially when the team starts losing badly, very badly.

But Manny refuses to give up, and become a loser again. This is a really good book for people who want to be athletes. Any athletes this is how you build confidence in your self. Like me, I'm the only girl on the team, and I still don't quit, because I'm playing soccer for me, only me, no one else. And after 6 years I've gotten pretty good at it, and am very satisfied of how well I've improved over the years.

Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs

***
Can you imagine a world in which palm trees grew in Alaska and there were coral reefs in the mountains of Canada? Well, the world of the dinosaurs was much warmer than it is today and the climate suited them perfectly. Many different types of dinosaurs lived together, from the Brachiosaurus (as tall as a four-storey building and heavier than ten adult elephants) to dinosaurs no bigger than a chicken.
Some of these were ferocious meat-eaters and some were gentle giants that ate only plants. Over millions of years the landscape changed and so did the creatures that roamed the land. And then, the dinosaurs died out! What happened to them? Do you have any theories? But what if there was still one left alive and you were lucky enough to keep a baby dinosaur as a pet?

Have you ever wondered how scary it must have been flying in the flimsy planes built at the beginning of the twentieth century? Plane trips are quite common today, but in days gone by this form of travel was unbelievable. Unlocking the secrets of flight was a lifelong goal of pioneers such as the Wright Brothers, and modern day explorers break new boundaries in the space shuttle.

This book shows you the old and the new: from the inventions of George Cayley and Lawrence Hargrave and the first hot air balloons to the planes used in both world wars, to stealth fighters and trips beyond Earth. And it even provides handy hints for those of you who want to keep a Harrier jump jet in your family garage!

Do they come in colors other than red? The thrill and action of racing is captured in the detailed pictures in this book, such as a close-up view of a racing car cockpit and engine. Whenever a whale comes close to shore, hundreds of people flock to see it frolicking in the water rolling over, spouting and slapping its tail at the waves. They hold their breath until it swims safely out to sea again in case the whale beaches itself on the sand and dies. Scientists have theories about why whales do this but no-one really knows why.

Whales, dolphins and porpoises are mammals of the sea and have captivated people for centuries. These beutiful creatures come in all shapes and sizes, and each one has its own personality, way of feeding, communicating, and so on. Look inside this book to see the actual size illustration of a blue whale's eye, a fight between a giant squid and a sperm whale, how we can protect whales and how you can keep a whale in your Swimming Pool!

Inkheart (Characterization)

In the book Inkheart written by Cornelia Funke, Meggie and her father, and some former friends, who shouldn't be called friends. Oh yeah, and I forgot the sassy aunt Elinor.
I choose Dustfinger as one of the most interesting characters, because in the middle of the adventures, Dustfinger develops into one of the most deep characters.

One point is that, in the beginning of the book Dustfinger was so calm, greedy, and cool, obviously expressing his feelings to Meggie about how he feels. In this line "Dustfinger looked first at Mo, then at Meggie, with an expression of incredulity on his face. "You haven't told her?" Said Dustfinger, (Trying to give away Mo's secret, that he can read people out of books, and read things into books)" Cornelia Funke obviously wanted to give away, the secret.

In another page Cornelia Funke, shows Dustfingers caring side, and how much he wants his normal life back. But Mo wants to read back his wife from the book, without even knowing if she really is in the book, or is somewhere else. In the chapter there was a quote, "Dustfinger carefully pulled up Gwin from the ground, seeing that he's tired. He carefully struck his tail the way he liked it." I think this shows how much Dustfinger cares about Gwin.
Here Dustfinger is really stressed, and aggressive. "How could you, How could you, that was the last copy, the only chance to get me back in the book, you fool!!!"
Then Dustfinger kicks one of the guards knee, and tries to pull the book out of the fire, but apparently his hands can't resist the heat anymore!!!
This book "Inkheart" is one exciting book, with incredible journeys especially half way around the world. Dustfinger is one of the most incredible characters I have ever seen, grow so strongly into a strong life saving man!

Earthquake Strikes Indonesia...

It was shortly before 3pm when it happened. The Earthquake struck Indonesia. it killed 38 people, but was a strong hit on the Richter Scale!!! Which was 7.6!!! I was at school when it happened, but why would a big fat snake surrounded by 650 Middle Scholars, and why would it go under the ground. There could be a slight possibility that the Snake could feel the small title waves forming the Earthquake.
There has been a Tsunami warning on television. Could this be because of the Ring of Fire??? The Rinf of Fire is an arc of intense seismic. .How can the people interact with the environment? Well it could be that when the Earthquake shakes, something could fall from the ceiling, and could kill someone. But when I was in school, I fell from the chair, and when I was on the ground face up my back could REALLY feel the title waves, that were present during the Earthquake. I didn't know that something so short could have scored such a high score on the Richter Scale. But it occurred to me that there could be another Earthquake, because of all the signs that have been connecting with the environment.

The report card

The Report Card
Andrew Clements
****

This book is about a girl named Nora Rose Rowley, who is so smart, they offered her to skip the grade she is attending right now, which is 5th grade by the way.

This reminds of a friend, she was so good at everything, I swear math, English, running, basketball, soccer, everything!!!

Okay, so back to the story. Now when Nora's at school no one hangs out with her, because obviously no one wants to hang out with a genius at their school!!

But one day in class everyone takes this really hard test which EVERYONE, EVERYONE struggles with except for Nora obviously because she's a genius. But then she takes a moment to think and says '' If I get a good score on this, I'll be the biggest freak ever. But what if I fail the test, and everyone sees it. Will I then be a smaller freak???".Yeah, you guessed of course she PURPOSELY did a bad job on the test… If you wanna know what happens in the book you HAVE to read it. I think the best part is when she shows her parents the bad report card, boy could I see the look on their face in my head!!! She was sent to her room, because her parents are used to her getting the best grades in school, and now she's way at the bottom!

This book is about a bunch cats that join together, and create a clan called the ThunderClan. These cats are responsible to protect everyone from the evil ShadowClan… This is a very very mysterious book, it's very much under the vategory Mystery, and a little under Fantasy. Okay back to the point. Then in the ThunderClan one cat disappears, no one knows where, when or why. So instead of the ThunderClan protecting the people from the ShadowClan they decide to search for their missing clan friend. But then, more, and more, and more cats disappear!!! What do you think will happen? But when the ThunderClan fights and something go's wrong or someone gets hurt it's not a good sign of them winning the cat fight.

This is an action packed adventure. Certain to please any reader who has ever wondered what dreams of grandeur may haunt the family cat. A suspectful animal adventure that will leave readers eyeing Puss a bit nervously.
